Tips for Working on Plaster Walls

If you live in an older house, say 50 or 60 years or older, there is a good likelihood that you have plaster on your walls. Plaster walls were very common, especially in the late 18th century and 19th century. Plaster was fairly readily available, was workable, and was capable of producing very smooth walls and ornate embellishments. It was and is however, very difficult to worth with. It took a fine plasterer many years to learn his trade under the careful instruction of a master plasterer.

Plaster is still widely available, though rarely used. Just check the painting aisles of
your local home improvement center and you'll see it mixed in with spackle and
patching compound. The reason for its demise was the invention of joint
compound. Unlike plaster, joint compound (or drywall compound) is easy to work
with. It is slow to set up and harden, is very easy to sand, mixes easily, can be
purchased already-mixed, and is easy to clean up. Joint compound works by simply
letting the water evaporate out, leaving the hard, white stuff on the wall.

Plaster, on the other hand, sets up quickly, hardens like cement, is very difficult to
work with once it starts to set up, is hard to clean up, and must be mixed up as
needed and in quantities that can be worked with quickly. Plaster as it sets up, is
actually a chemical reaction between the solid plaster and the water.

For this reason, joint compound is the natural choice for most new homes and
patching jobs. However, plaster is by far the superior product. A plaster wall is rock
hard, has a solid sound, and feel, is not easy damaged or scratched, and can
withstand some abuse. These properties make for some interesting remodeling and
repairs.

A simple task such as hanging a hook for a picture frame can cause large chunks of
plaster to break free from the wall and come crashing down. Try to drive a drywall
screw into plaster can be an exercise in frustration as chunks break out of the wall
and the screw getting dulled by the plaster, Drill bits and saw blades dull instantly
on contact.

Because of these challenges with plaster, I have compiled a few tips for working with
it. Be aware, that these work for me in most situations, but plaster can be different
and behave differently in different locations, so work very carefully.

1. When hanging a picture frame from a hook with a nail in it, first tape a large
piece of masking tape over the area where you will drive the nail. This will help
prevent chip-out. Once the nail is in place, remove the tape.

2. Another way to insert a wall hanger for a picture frame is to drill a small pilot
hole for the nail. The pilot hole need not be deep. Just deep enough to penetrate the
topcoat of plaster. If you see brown dust coming from the drill bit, you are through
the topcoat and into the brown coat.

3. To drive a screw through plaster, always drill a pilot hole!

4. Never use a drywall screw in plaster to hold anything! Even though it may seem
that the plaster is holding it in place, you risk tearing out a large chunk of plaster
should you find a weak spot. Always screw through the plaster and into the studs.

5. When screwing through plaster and into the wall studs, make sure you are into
the wall studs and not the wood lath that holds the plaster on the wall! Pulling down
lath is one of the worst things you can do, as it will pull down large chunks of
plaster with it!

6. Standard stud finders don't work on plaster walls. You need stud sensors that
feature some sort of deep penetrating technology. Common stud finders are
designed for half-inch drywall walls and can distinguish plaster thickness very well.

7. Use the tapping technique to find studs. Plaster has good harmonics and by
tapping or rapping it with your knuckles, you can usually hear the hollows between
the studs fairly easily.

8. Like anything else in an old house, be extra careful! There weren't building
codes when many of these houses were built so there is no guarantee that you wall
studs are evenly spaced, that there aren't old pipes in the walls, or that abandoned
and antiquated plumbing and electrical lines exist in the walls.

Remember, work slowly and smartly! Never rush an old house project. Take a few
minutes to think things out several times. You will still run into surprises, but if you
work slowly and deliberately, hopefully, they won't ruin your day!

How to Make Handmade Rings

Handmade accessories are always trendy and never went out of fashion. If you search online, many are selling handmade accessories on online stores. Likewise, many web pages were put up, dedicated to disclose easy do-it-yourself guides. However, it is rare to see instructions on making handmade rings on these pages.

Rings do not receive much attention like necklaces and bracelets obtain. It is not only because of its size but also, the choice of material for handmade rings are limited.

Wire handmade rings are "in" in today's generation and come in different colors and shapes to match other handmade accessories. Twisting the wire is complicated but if you have the right tools, it will be easy.

The materials to be used for the handmade rings are:

• Soft 18g wire, about 30 cm long per ring. There are several types of wire sold in the craft stores. You can choose from sterling silver, copper and the likes.
• One (1) rondell shape handmade bead. Make sure that, it has a large hole so you can pull two (2) wires through easily.
• Wire cutter
• Chain-nose pliers
• Ring mandrel with the desired diameter of the handmade accessories. Mandrels are sold in jewelry supply stores. If you are making several rings, then purchase several mandrels of different sizes. You can also make use of the items you have at home like candle, handle of the broom, etc., if getting several mandrels is impossible.

Instructions for making handmade rings:

1. Lay the wire on your work surface and position the ring mandrel at the center of the ring. Make sure that the length of the wire is equal on both sides of the mandrel. Wrap the wire two times on the mandrel.
2. Do not cut the excess wire, but instead bend it up sharply.
3. Insert and slide down the bead until it reaches the base of the handmade ring.
4. Bend the wires right on top of the bead forming a right angle.
5. Coil the wires above the bead by creating a small circle using one wire. Push the other wire against it without overlapping them. Firmly coil the wires against the bead. If it puffs up, press firmly the wires downward using a piece of wood. If the desired number of coils has been reached, leave 5 cm of wire to close the handmade ring before cutting the excess wire.
6. Bring the 5 cm-wires down to the shank on each sides of the bead, and then twine it on the ring's base to secure the handmade accessory. Trim the wire ends properly to prevent hurting yourself. A small exposed sharp end is very dangerous.
7. Your handmade ring is done.

If you have several beads with different colors, you can make more handmade rings and send them out as gifts. Likewise, match the ring with your other handmade accessories.

Soap Making Methods

There are various methods which can be used to make soap at home. The basic process for making bars of solid soap is similar for each technique, but there are variations depending on the method used by the soap-maker.

In all processes, the oil or fat is heated, lye and water are mixed, and then the lye-water mixture is combined with the oils.

The mixture then has to be stirred until it achieves the trace stage, at which point it is poured into a mold, and allowed to set, typically for 24-48 hours. The bars continue to harden for another 3 to 8 weeks, depending on the ingredients used.

The most popular method for making soap at home is the cold-process method, so named because no external heat is applied to the soap during saponification (the process by which the lye combines with the fats and oils to make soap). With this method, the soap is made from scratch, and while it takes longer than other methods, you have complete control over the quality of the ingredients that go into your soap, and it is typically easier for beginners.

The melt-and-pour method involves taking pure glycerin (animal or vegetable derived), which is always in liquid form, and solidifying it by adding other chemicals. The lather is created by adding pure detergents. Natural ingredients may be added to this variety of soap, but the glycerin base is synthetic, and this method can be expensive, as you are making soap from a by-product of other soap.

However, it is quicker, more convenient, and somewhat safer than making soap from scratch. Also, there is no need to wait weeks for the soap to cure; the bars are ready to use as soon as they cool and harden.

Bars of fragrance- and dye-free soap base can be purchased from many craft and soap supply stores. (You could also try to find some variety of unscented, additive-free soap in a grocery or health-and-beauty store.)

Rebatching refers to the process of melting soap scraps, or chunks of soap base, and remolding them.

Rebatching is useful if you have soaps that are warped, or otherwise aesthetically flawed, but still usable; it also helps to extract the full medicinal or beautifying benefits from any herbs you have added to soap. The fresher the soap is, the better, because the longer it cures, the less moisture it contains, and the harder it is to melt.

As with the melt-and-pour method, as soon as the soap hardens and cools, it is ready to use.

The hot-process method differs from cold-process in that external heat is applied after the fats and oils are mixed together. Instead of allowing saponification to take place during the molding stage - which takes a long time - saponification takes place before the soap is molded.

If you want to use a natural lye solution, such as potash, instead of 100% lye, hot-process is the best method to employ because the hot-process method requires less exact measurements than the cold-process method, since saponification is "forced" instead of taking place on its own.

In the hot-process method, the mixture is heated over a double-boiler, or in a crock-pot, during the trace stage, and the soap is, quite literally, "cooked" to achieve more rapid neutralization. The crock-pot method is usually preferred because the temperature is easily regulated, and the soap is less likely to burn.

Unlike cold-process soap, hot-process soap can be used immediately after it has cooled and hardened, because it should be completely neutralized already; therefore, there is no curing time necessary.

However, it is still a good idea to cure the soap, because the soap may still be soft or spongy, and may not lather properly, or last as long.

The warm-process method is, as you may guess, somewhere between the cold-process and hot-process methods. Instead of insulating the soap with blankets while it is in the molding stage, or boiling it to achieve faster saponification, the filled soap molds are heated in an oven.

The full-boiled method is typically favored by commercial soap-makers. All ingredients are added at once, in a large container, and heated to cause saponification. Glycerin is a by-product created via this method. The glycerin is typically removed by commercial soap-makers, and sold; however, your soap, with the glycerin still in it, will be naturally more moisturizing and skin-conditioning than commercial bars.

The transparent method is utilized to make clear soap; alcohol is added to the other ingredients to prevent crystallization while it cools and solidifies. Lots of creative projects can be made with this variety of soap. It's great for innovative and adorable gifts. Transparent soap is sometimes called glycerin soap, but this is a misnomer, since glycerin isn't utilized at all during this process. One downside to transparent soap is that, because of the alcohol added to the mixture, it can be somewhat drying for some skin types.

In this day and age when so many of our products are mass produced in the far east it is good to know that we can still make high quality luxury goods in the country of origin. In the UK sterling silver is still produced in the traditional way and stamped with a hallmark to prove its origin and silver content.

Hallmarks were introduced in the late 18th century as a dual benefit to guarantee that the manufacturer is producing real sterling silver on each and every piece and to protect the purchaser.

Sterling silver, sometimes called solid silver, must have a precious metal content of 925 parts in 1000 and be independently and formally assessed as so. Every piece of sterling silver in stamped with an independent hallmark.

How to read a sterling silver hallmark

Each hallmark consist of 4 marks or symbols:-

Makers mark - each manufacturer has a unique mark. For example the mark for Broadway Silversmiths is B&Co.

The Standard mark - indicated that the silver is at least 925 parts in 1000 and is represented by an anchor.

The Assay Office mark - each item is tested and stamped with the hallmark at independent government run offices in Birmingham, London, Sheffield and Edinburgh. The Birmingham mark is a lion.

The Date mark - a single letter indicates the year (since the year 1773) in which the product was hallmarked. Obviously since we have a maximum of 26 letters the form of it changes - capitals, small letters and different fonts.

Ensure that if you purchase any UK sterling silver quality tableware or gift that it has this information present.
